About MRC UM

Mushroom Research Centre was a coming together of researchers from Faculty of Science and Medicine in 2005 to spearhead quality  research,  knowledge dissemination, human resource training, product and process development in consonance with the nation’s needs for a  vibrant mushroom industry and  to exploit Malaysia’s  mushroom biodiversity for food, feed, fuel and chemicals.

Our activities include acquisition of macrofungal diversity of Malaysia – an unexploited gene pool for biotechnological applications;  training of human resource and dissemination of knowledge; research in mushroom biology and biotechnology  and promotional activities - taking the findings to industry and  society  in collaboration with Department of Agriculture (DOA) and Malaysian Mushroom Research Association.

OUR AIMS
1. To foster multidisciplinary research collaboration and networking in mushroom research, within the University,   nationally and internationally
2. To provide a well supported focus in mushroom research activities to enhance national and global competitiveness for funding and recognition.
3. To strengthen and promote excellence in teaching in the current aspects of mushroom research focusing on high   quality p+ostgraduate education and professional training
4. To disseminate current knowledge in mushroom research to end-users through MoU, publications, consultancies and training
5. To create awareness of the goodness of mushroom in a healthy diet to the public through the media, public lectures and exhibitions
6. To publish in journals, monographs and books of high impact and international repute

HISTORY OF MRC

Fungal research is University of Malaya’s forte. Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Nawawi Ayub and Dr. Kuthubutheen A. Jalaludin, former Professors of Institute of Biological Sciences are eminent and world renown mycologists who laid the foundation for fungal research in UM.
Currently, with complimentary expertists in systematics and biotechnology, we have established research activities which includes : biodiversity - documentation and acquisition; health - natural products, nutraceuticals and food safety; agriculture – specialty mushroom for food and disease control; environment – bioremediation and clean technologies; industry – green chemicals including production of enzymes in agroresidues. Our centre has been participating actively in the collaborative research with some prominent scientists from City University, Hong Kong; BIOTECH and Mushroom Research Centre, Thailand; San Francisco State University and New York Botanic Garden, USA and Canterbury University, New Zealand as well as some local scientists. Our contributions to the diversity and biotechnology of mushrooms are well recognized both nationally and internationally.
To date, the group has published more than 300 papers in reputated national and international journals in fungal taxonomy and applied mycology. We have also trained or currently training 100 undergraduates and 33 postgraduate specializing in various aspects of mushroom research.
An endorsement of our achievements include Awards in Science and Technology, IPTA, UM Expo and at 33rd Invention, Innovation and New Products Expo in Geneva (2005).
